I woke up at 6 AM yesterday to watch the Oscars, from the Red Carpet to the show itself. I watched the encore last night with my sister, who kept me company because my nanny didn’t come home. Tssss! 😐

Thoughts:

1) I feel sad that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 didn’t win any award considering the work that hundreds of people had done to make everything come to life. The HP movie series had had a total of nine Academy Award nominations and had not won anything. I’d have to say Alexandre Desplat should have been nominated for Best Original Score.

2) Hugo, on the other hand, directed by Martin Scorsese, won most of the awards in the technical categories. I will watch that movie in order to find out why everyone is raving about it.

3) Angelina Jolie’s leg (NOTE: singular) has got people talking. She wore a black dress with a thigh-high split that flaunted her skinny leg. Tell me, why is she so skinny?

4) Gwyneth Paltrow wore “helmet hair” and a cape. Enough said.

5) Emma Stone was absolutely gorgeous and she did a wonderful job presenting an award for the first time.

6) I think Michelle Williams is the most beautiful girl on the planet, followed by Natalie Portman.

7) I crossed my fingers for Octavia Spencer. She won the Actress in a Supporting Role award for The Help. She’s amazing. I also rooted for her co-star, Viola Davis, who was aiming for the Actress in a Leading Role trophy but she lost to Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady. This year marked Meryl’s 17th nomination and 3rd Oscar since the early 1980’s.

8) I applaud Saving Face and A Separation. Saving Face (created by Daniel Junge and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy) is about Pakistani women victims of acid attacks, who are undergoing plastic surgery and dealing with the aftermath of their disfigurement. It won the Best Documentary (Short Subject) trophy. A Separation (directed by Asghar Farhadi) is the first Iranian movie to win an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film but not the first Iranian movie to be nominated in this category. Children of Heaven was nominated in 1998 but lost to Life is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni of Italy.

9) Billy Crystal hosted the show fantastically but bring back James Franco and Anne Hathaway. They’re the best duo ever!

10) I now think The Artist and Michel Hazanavicius deserved their respective awards. I was indifferent at first because I never liked silent films. Also, Best Director should be announced right before Best Picture. Best Director completely spoils the surprise since most of the time, the Best Director’s film wins Best Picture, right?

11) My jaw dropped to my knees the second Cirque du Soleil began their performance.

Anyway, congratulations to all the winners!

Confetti!

My three favorites in this year’s awards night (OH, are they color-coordinated or what?):
